You May Not Be Able to Spell It But You Can Eat It!
The Finnish-American Folk Festival gives festival attendees a chance to shop and eat in an atmosphere reminiscent of Finland as the Tori (Marketplace) and food court provide items with a Finnish flavor as well as some more USA-like merchandise, food, and beverages.
The 19 food booths, plus the summer buffet provided by the Comet Booster Club on Saturday, give the hungry festival crowd a wide variety of choices in the food department. Just a sample of these food items includes:
Sandwiches by Maija Ross; Wild blackberry pie, rice pudding, and assorted
breads by Mickey Bates and Eva (Kuhns) Jennngs; Kermakakku (Cream cake),
fudge, lemonade and coffee by the Valley Bible Church group; Sausages on a
stick by Judy and Duane Kent, and the Tori Cafe with three kinds of Finnish
biscuit, Finnish celebration cake, and other dessert delicacies by Sirkka
Wirkkala.
The Comet Booster Club's "Summer Buffet" will include a mainly Finnish
menu of: Chilled baked salmon with mustard sour cream sauce, Scandinavian
meatballs, Potato salad, Coleslaw, Pickled beets, Sweet-sour cucumber salad,
Rieska, and Rice pudding with berry sauce. The Saturday buffet will sell for
$9.00 for adults and $4.00 for children 8 and under.
Also at the festival: how to gut a fish . . . and other demonstartions . . . and recipes! Remember: Naselle's Finnish-American Folk Festival is a learning as well as a gustatory event!
